About the Exam

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is a standardised test administered by the College Board that serves as practice for the SAT and qualifies students for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSQT).

Unlike a simple practice test, the PSAT is a strategic tool — students who score in the top percentile can qualify for National Merit recognition, unlocking life-changing scholarships worth thousands of dollars.

🏅 National Merit Scholarship Connection

The PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT scores in Class 11 are used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Semifinalist cutoffs vary by state — typically 1460–1520. EduQuest has helped students achieve Commended and Semifinalist recognition.

PSAT 8/9
Class 8–9
Designed for Class 8 and 9 students. An introductory benchmark that identifies strengths and gaps early, giving students a 3–4 year head start on their SAT journey.
Score Range: 240–1440  |  Duration: 2h 25m
PSAT 10
Class 10
Taken in Class 10. Scored the same as the PSAT/NMSQT but not eligible for National Merit. Serves as a critical mid-point check before Class 11.
Score Range: 320–1520  |  Duration: 2h 45m
PSAT/NMSQT
Class 11 ⭐
The most important version. Taken in Class 11. Scores determine National Merit Scholarship eligibility. This is the version that can win scholarships worth $2,500 to full rides.
Score Range: 320–1520  |  Duration: 2h 45m

National Merit Scholarship — Selection Index

For PSAT/NMSQT, your Selection Index = (Reading & Writing score + Math score) × 2 × a scaling factor. Semifinalist cutoffs in most US states range from 207–221. EduQuest's targeted coaching focuses on pushing your Selection Index above the state threshold, maximising your National Merit recognition chances.

Why Start Now

Why the PSAT is More Than
Just Practice

Most students underestimate the PSAT. EduQuest students understand it's a strategic advantage — and use it as one.

01
🏆
National Merit Scholarships
Score in the top 3–4% and qualify as a Commended Scholar or Semifinalist. Corporate-sponsored scholarships can reach $10,000+. Some colleges offer full merit aid to Finalists.
02
📊
SAT Score Predictor
PSAT scores are highly correlated with SAT scores. A 1400+ PSAT typically translates to a 1450–1550 SAT. Taking the PSAT in Class 9–10 gives you 2–3 years to target your SAT goal.
03
🎯
Identify Gaps Early
The PSAT's detailed score report pinpoints exact weaknesses — by question type, domain, and skill. EduQuest uses this to build a personalised study plan for SAT readiness.
04
🎓
College Recruitment Gateway
Colleges use PSAT scores to identify students for recruitment. High scorers receive personalised outreach from top universities — Harvard, Yale, Stanford and others actively recruit through this channel.
05
🔄
Digital SAT Familiarity
The PSAT uses the same Bluebook platform and adaptive format as the Digital SAT. Students who have taken the PSAT enter the SAT with significant test-day confidence and familiarity.
06
EduQuest's Early Start Edge
Students who start PSAT prep in Class 8–9 consistently outperform last-minute SAT preppers. EduQuest's 4-year integrated track builds compounding academic advantages year over year.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

PSAT 8/9 is for Class 8–9 students, scores 240–1440. PSAT 10 is for Class 10 students, scores 320–1520 but not eligible for National Merit. PSAT/NMSQT is for Class 11 students, scores 320–1520, and is the version that qualifies for National Merit Scholarships. All three are on the same digital adaptive format via Bluebook.

Indian students attending US high schools or international schools that administer the PSAT/NMSQT are eligible. Students scoring at or above the state/school Commended cutoff (~top 50,000 nationally, ~207+ Selection Index) receive recognition. Semifinalists (top 16,000) and Finalists qualify for corporate-sponsored scholarships ranging from $2,500 to full-ride awards. EduQuest has a dedicated National Merit pathway.

The earlier, the better. EduQuest recommends starting PSAT awareness in Class 8, PSAT 8/9 prep formally in Class 9, and NMSQT-targeted coaching from Class 10 onward. Students who start in Class 9 consistently score 200–300 points higher on the NMSQT than those who start in Class 11. Our 5-year integrated track is specifically designed for this compounding advantage.

PSAT scores themselves do not go on college applications, but National Merit recognition does — and it's a powerful signal. Beyond that, colleges use the College Board's Student Search Service to recruit high-PSAT scorers. Many Ivy League and top US universities proactively reach out to students with high PSAT scores for recruitment.

EduQuest offers three modes: (1) Online Live — real-time classes via Zoom with recordings, accessible from anywhere in India or internationally; (2) Hybrid — a mix of online and in-person sessions in Delhi/Gurgaon; (3) Classroom — in-person at EduQuest centres. All modes include the same mock test access, 1-on-1 sessions, and faculty support.

Our NMSQT Elite program includes a score improvement guarantee policy. If a student completes 90%+ of the coursework and attends all scheduled sessions but does not improve by at least 100 points over their diagnostic score, we offer a complimentary 3-month extension. Terms and conditions apply — contact us for details.

The PSAT and digital SAT share the same Bluebook adaptive format and question types. Key differences: PSAT is slightly shorter (2h 45m vs 3h 14m for SAT), PSAT does not test the most advanced SAT Math topics (though these are introduced in EduQuest's integrated program), and the PSAT max score is 1520 vs. SAT's 1600. Students who score 1450+ on PSAT typically score 1500+ on SAT with EduQuest's bridge training.
